The vision for Rosy Mound Natural Area began in 1989, when the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission identified a nearly 300-acre sand mine property along Lake Michigan as a high priority.

The original 164-acre property was purchased in 1994 from a sand mining company, with a vision to one day expand the park by acquiring the adjacent 127- acre parcel still in operation. In 2024, the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission (OCPRC) realized this vision, bringing the park to 291 acres.

The OCPRC is moving into the next chapter for Rosy Mound: implementing Phase One improvements that will protect the delicate ecosystem while offering the public an opportunity to experience the expanded park in a safe, sustainable, and inclusive way.
