10 Years of Bridging Community to Nature |
In 2026, the Ottawa County Parks Foundation proudly celebrates 10 years of Bridging Community to Nature.
Throughout the year, our e-newsletter will highlight milestones from the past decade, share reflections from members of the Foundation’s founding Board of Directors, and showcase the lasting impact your generosity has made across Ottawa County Parks. Here’s to 10 years and the many more to come. |
2021
The Ottawa County Parks Foundation provided funding for development of the Ottawa Sands Master Plan and supported the Grand River Coastal Corridor Study focused on migratory bird habitat along the Grand River |
Brian Stauffer
One of Brian's favorite quotes comes from the Norwegians saying, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.” So, dress right and get out there. The beauty of Ottawa County Parks is hard to beat and they provide great places to exercise and play. Brian Stauffer served on the Foundation's Board from its' founding until 2021. Brian also served as the Foundation's Vice President.

Plant of the Month: Ram's Head Lady-slipper |
by Bobbi Jones Sabine
You have to be in the right place at the right time to view ram’s head lady-slipper (Cypripedium arietinum) in bloom. This delicate native orchid is highly selective about its habitat, with a Coefficient of Conservatism rated at 10, as fussy as you can get.
Found primarily in the northern lower peninsula, around the straits of Mackinac, and scattered locations in the UP all the way up to the Keweenaw, this perennial beauty prefers low dunes, in partial shade from conifers, along the shores of Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior. It can also occur inland under jack pine and oak, and in coniferous swamps. It is native to the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada.
The striking purple and white flowers generally appear from the latter part of May to mid-June, but do not produce nectar; pollinators (mostly bees) appear to be attracted by the color and fragrance of the flowers. It’s listed as a Special Concern species in Michigan.
These plants have a long history in traditional medicine, valued for their calming and restorative properties. However, there are many potential side effects, and harvesting is highly discouraged due to rarity.
