In 2026, the Ottawa County Parks Foundation proudly celebrates 10 years of Bridging Community to Nature. All year long, we will share special reflections from members of the Foundation’s founding Board of Directors.

What motivated you to start the Foundation?
The Foundation was the vision of John Scholz the Director of Ottawa County Parks. He created the Foundation and I was honored to be nominated by him to be a member of the initial Board. I was motivated to participate as initial Board member because I deeply believed in the incredible and life lasting value of parks and open space to our environment, habitat, species and to the mental and physical health of individuals, families, friends and society.
What was the need that you saw, which led to your involvement with starting the Foundation?
I viewed the Foundation as a means to engage the private sector through active public, business and civic involvement in sustaining and perpetuating the mission of the Parks Commission and Parks Staff.
What is your personal passion for parks?
My passion for parks is the opportunity parks provide me to commune through nature with nature, family and friends in a manner which restores and sustains me mentally and physically.
What did you personally get from starting the founding?
The joy of being actively involved in helping others to sustain the Parks for future generations.
What is your favorite park and why?
North Ottawa, because of the wooded dunes, and open areas of dune grass. Jane and I had our best outdoor experience ever snow shoeing one winter night in North Ottawa in total silence under the glow of a magnificent full moon.
Is there a moment that stands out to you from your childhood and being connected with nature?
My parents took for family to parks most weekends for picnics and hikes. We even went in the winter and my Mom prepared a warm lunch over the camp stove. The wonderful time spent with my family outdoors became an integral part of life which remains with me today and has been passed on to our family.
Who invited you outside to enjoy nature?
My parents.
What were your hopes for Ottawa County Parks and the Foundation?
I hope the Parks will continue to grow to ensure that each resident of the County has access to use the Parks and to enjoy nature and time with family and friends. It is my hope that the Foundation will be the catalyst for community involvement in our Parks not just financially, but also for sustaining critical habitat, for providing educational programs for all students in the County and for providing wellness programs for all residents of the County.
